What is difference between Letter and Word?

To understand the grammatical concepts, there are some basic requirements that we have to equip for better Knowledge. There are some sequence by which we can learn the concepts of grammar.




Talking about concepts of Grammar, today we will discuss the basis to detail explanation about what is the differences between Word and Letter.



Basically, there is simple concept to understand this statement that letter is just building block of language that makes Word and other further complex statements like Phrase and Clause. In this scenario, letter doesn't have a specific meaning that it represents. But unlike Letter, first unit of English language that carries a specific meaning.


It's basically group of letters or letter which has a specific meaning for which it is used.


Understanding Letters in details


There are 26 letters in English Grammar by which any unit that basically has meaning is made. Out of 26 letters, 5 are Vowels which is the most used Letters which is used in making words. But like we discussed, they lacks in having meaning. 



Understanding Words in details


Anything statement or phenomena that has a specific meaning is shorted by a word that is equivalent to that Idea. Word is basically when it is used instead of an idea. It is equal to that meaning. If group of words doesn't express anything, any statement or explanation then there must not be word.


On the basis of different aspects having different meaning, Words are divided into 8 categories together they are called as Parts of Speech.


Noun is one of the first of 8 types of words that is the name of anything that we can feel, see or assume. Noun in general is the name of person, thing, animal and places.


On the basis of quantity, it is divided into 2 type.


• Countable Noun: It can be counted.

• Uncountable Noun: It can't be counted.


Countable Noun is a, aswritten above, noun that can be counted by human or machine. If we can count this, then there must be one or more than two in quality. That's why Countable Noun is classified in two categories.


1. Singular Noun

2. Plural Noun


Singular Noun is Noun that represents only one quality of particular aspect.

Ex: Boy, Girl, Person etc.


Plural Nouns represent more than one aspect.

Ex: Boys, Girls, People etc.

Countable Noun


Countable Noun is Noun which can be counted in general.


Like an Idea or expression, we can just feel it. It is neither Singular not Plural. But To under its syntax clearly, it regarded as Singular in grammar, we use singular finite verb while making Clause or sentence. We use definite Article before it.



In general, Noun is classified in 5 categories.


• Proper Noun: This Category of Noun is used instead of specific person or thing that has unique identity all about. There is no such individual or statement existence other than this. This is what Proper Noun is called.


• Common Noun: This Category of Noun is used for more than one aspect, it is said to be a class where something having similar functioning and charectors are put. We can understand it clearly by an example.


We use Boy word to represent everyone small human being having male carecter that's the Common Noun. 


• Collective Noun: This Noun represent the Class or organisation that is existing by either single or more than one individual. However, it is regarded as Singular Noun.


• Abstract Noun: Abstract Noun is the something that we can feel. If we feel, we can't count it in general that's why we is assumed as Singular in grammar.


• Material Noun: All materials like oil, Water, etc. are called as Material Noun. It is also regarded as Singular.
