What is Preposition and Prepositional Phrase?

Let's start today's Article discussing about Preposition and Prepositional Phrase. 


Before letting you known about Preposition, you must have knowledge about what the connectors are.

In Grammar, Connectors are the elements which usually joins two statements like word to word, phrase to phrase and Clause to Clause in a sentence. This is because to add more information in a single statement or sentence. The more complexity in grammar makes your skills better when writing and speaking. So the purpose of telling you about connectors is just to let you know that Preposition is a also a connector which joins it's object with other words. 

Preposition is a word or group of words which is used before Noun and Pronoun called as its object to show relation with other words in the sentence. Preposition in a sentence actually increases the length of the sentence by adding extra information about particular words.


Preposition is of three kinds according to its extension.

1. Simple Preposition

In, For, Of, To, From etc.


2. Phrase Preposition

Without, Wherein, Within etc.

3. Compound Preposition

According to, because of etc.



But the scenario is all opposite in the case of Prepositional Phrase, like preposition shows relation of its object with other word, as a whole preposition and its object called as Prepositional Phrase does the work of modifier. Preposition by connecting also does the work of showing the manner in the it's object is relatable with the word to which it modifies.

Prepositional Phrase is by meaning of two kinds.


1. Adjective Phrase
2. Adverb Phrase


Like an adjective, Prepositional Phrase can modify a noun, pronoun.

Also like an adverb, it can modify Verb, Adjective, another adverb sometimes whole sentence also.
